Common Questions
Everything You Want to Know Before Reaching Out.
If you’re on the fence about counselling or just want to know what to expect, these are the questions I hear most often.
About Counselling
Is counselling right for me?
Do I need to be in crisis to see a counsellor?
No — and most of the women I work with aren’t. Many are functioning well on the outside but feel chronically exhausted, disconnected, or like they’ve lost themselves somewhere along the way. You don’t need to hit a breaking point to deserve support.
How do I know if what I’m feeling is serious enough?
If it’s affecting your quality of life, your relationships, or how you feel about yourself — it’s serious enough. You don’t need to justify needing help.
Can counselling help with stress and burnout — or is it just for serious mental illness?
Counselling is well-suited to stress, burnout, anxiety and overwhelm — you don’t need a diagnosis to benefit. Many people find it most helpful exactly when things feel heavy but not yet crisis-level.
What does counselling actually help with?
I work with stress, anxiety, burnout, overwhelm, low mood, life transitions, identity, and the particular kind of exhaustion that comes from carrying too much for too long. If something is affecting how you feel about yourself or your life, it’s worth talking about.
What’s the difference between counselling and therapy?
In everyday conversation, the terms are often used interchangeably. In British Columbia, "counsellor" and "therapist" typically refer to the same kind of professional. I’m Kandice Dondona, MPCC, Clinical Counsellor — trained to support you with a wide range of emotional and mental health concerns.
Will counselling actually help?
Research consistently shows that counselling is effective for stress, anxiety, burnout, and overwhelm — especially when there’s a good fit between client and counsellor. The free consultation is a chance to see if that fit is there before you commit.
Working with Kandice
What can I expect from working together?
Who do you work with?
I provide 1:1 counselling to adults of all genders across British Columbia. My practice has a particular focus on overwhelmed women, including mothers — but if you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, burnout or overwhelm and feel like we might be a good fit, I’d love to hear from you.
Do you work with mothers or people experiencing the mental load?
Yes. A significant part of my practice is supporting mothers and women who are carrying an enormous amount — mentally, emotionally and practically. If you feel like you’re holding everything together for everyone else while quietly falling apart yourself, this is a space for you.
Do you work with men or couples?
Yes, I work with adults of all genders. My practice has a particular focus on overwhelmed women, including mothers. I provide individual counselling only and do not offer couples counselling.
Do you work virtually across all of BC?
Yes — all sessions are online via secure video, which means I can work with anyone living in British Columbia, whether you’re in Vancouver, Coquitlam, Kelowna, Victoria or anywhere else in the province.
What is your approach like?
Warm, practical and client-centred. Sessions feel like real conversation — not a lot of silence and nods. I work collaboratively with you to understand what’s driving the patterns, and focus on changes that are actually doable in your real life.
What does a typical session look like?
Sessions are 60 minutes via secure video. We’ll talk about what’s going on for you, what patterns keep showing up, and what you actually want to feel different. I work in a warm, practical way — not a lot of silence and nods, but real conversation with direction.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you’re working on. Some people prefer a focused short-term approach; others find ongoing support more helpful. We’ll find a rhythm that works for you.

Is virtual counselling covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan. I provide receipts that you can submit for reimbursement where your plan covers clinical counselling or MPCC services. I’d recommend confirming your coverage directly with your provider before we begin.
Where are you based and who can you see?
I’m based in Coquitlam, BC, and offer counselling virtually — which means I can work with anyone across British Columbia.
